Description:
The David L. MacIntosh Sport Medicine Clinic services members of the university community and public. This includes, but is not limited to, intercollegiate, provincial and international-calibre athletes. The staff provide preventive and therapeutic sport medicine services in the clinic, and at some athletic events. The staff includes certified athletic therapists, registered physical therapists, registered massage therapists, chiropractors, sport physicians, orthopaedic surgeons, receptionists and a clinic manager. A multi-disciplinary team approach is adopted in patient care.
Under general supervision of the Head Therapist and the Clinic Manager, the incumbent provides preventative and therapeutic sport medicine services for clinical therapy, intercollegiate and provincial team care, practical instruction of students and clinical supervision of students. Duties include performing physical therapy assessments; designing and implementing therapeutic treatment plans, providing First Aid and triage assessment and managing acute injuries; maintaining records of assessments and treatments performed; submitting billing records of service, maintaining clinic equipment and a clean, safe environment; participating in the Clinic's in-service training programs; aiding the Clinic Receptionist in booking therapy appointments, cooperating with the Clinic Manager and/or Head Therapist in arranging the clinic's therapy schedule. Under general supervision of the Head Therapist, the incumbent has prime responsibility for coordinating and/or providing Sport Medicine services for designated teams including performing pre-participation medical evaluations, ensuring participants have completed pre-participation questionnaires and consent forms and that high risk participants are assessed and cleared by a staff physician. The incumbent provides preventive and therapeutic services within their professional scope-of-practice to the designated teams on-site at some of their practice and competition venue(s). This "field care" includes attending practices and competitions, advising the coaching staf on the safety of practice and competition venues, evaluating practice drills, techniques and exercises, providing injury-preventive services, advanced level of first aid and emergency management of acute injuries, providing rehabilitative care at the venue when appropriate, maintaining records of injuries, assessment and treatments provided, supervising student or casual therapists or other assistants assigned to assist in field care of the designated teams. The position includes participation as a member of the Integrated Support Team (IST) that coordinates and provides applied sport science and sport medicine care to Varsity and Provincial teams; maintaining records on the health status of members of the designated team(s) and communicating with the coach(es) about the medical status of athletes, serving as a liaison or service representative for the athletes, facilitating their access to appropriate services and advising regarding their health care, assisting the Head Therapist in maintaining therapy equipment and supplies.
Qualifications: (MINIMUMS)
Education:
Must be a Registered Physiotherapist in Ontario , maintain professional malpractice insurance, possess and maintain valid certification as a First Responder (or obtain this status within six months of commencing this position, and thereafter maintain it). Postgraduate professional development courses in a variety of neuro-musculo-skeletal therapeutic techniques is an asset, particularly orthopaedic assessment and manual and manipulative therapy and sport physiotherapy. Relevant courses in other schools or techniques of manual or soft-tissue therapy, taping, therapeutic exercise, or other skills related to a physiotherapist's scope-of-practice are an asset.
Successful completion of examinations, and certification by any specialty branch of the Canadian Physiotherapy Association is an asset, particularly: Intermediate Diploma of Manual & Manipulative Physiotherapy (RCAMT)and/or Advanced Diploma of Manual & Manipulative Physiotherapy (FCAMT), Sport Physiotherapy Canada Certificate or Diploma. Membership in, and/or certification by the Canadian Athletic Therapist Association is an asset.
Experience:
Three years' experience as a physiotherapist in a multi-disciplinary sport medicine clinic, or in a clinic specializing in orthopaedics or other musculo-skeletal health care. Experience in sport field care at an elite or high performance level is an asset.
Skills:
Strong organizational, teamwork, and interpersonal skills, strong communication skills, both oral and written, computer literacy.
